The laws for waste tyres
Responsibilities of a waste tyre producer
It is your responsibility to ensure that the waste tyres, even after they leave your premises, are properly recovered or disposed of. You should make sure they are collected by a registered waste carrier. If you are storing them, you must do so safely so they don't present a fire risk.
Fire hazard
Waste tyres are a valuable resource and can be used in a range of industrial and engineering processes, and in consumer products. But tyres do not decompose and are a major fire risk, releasing toxic fumes into the air. They must be recycled or reused under strict controls in order to protect the environment and human health.
Criminal activity
Organised criminal gangs are charging people to collect their waste tyres and then illegally dumping or exporting them to avoid the costs of proper treatment. Illegally dumped stockpiles can present a serious fire risk to the environment. Burning tyres can cause significant pollution, releasing toxic smoke and chemicals. The cost of fighting these fires and clearing up afterwards is high; sometimes being funded by the taxpayer's money. While there is a legitimate export market for quality recyclable materials, the illegal export of waste undermines law-abiding disposal and tyre recovery businesses. This harms the people and the environment in the country the waste is exported to.
